This prototyp carrier was build by Norman Holtkamp . He started as USAC-rated west Coast pros and became after that one of the top West Coast tuners . he was on “Agajanian’s crew when troy Ruttman won the Indy 500 with Aggie’s car . later he became a top sports car handler .
The idea for this carrier came from Stuttgart . How you can see this one looks like the speed transporter from 1955 . That time Mercedes had the fastest racing car transporter of the world ( 103 mph ) .
The result , after 9 month of work , is this sleek , modern transporter , capable of carrying a ton of racing machinery at speed over 112 mph .
Holtkamp build the prototyp chassis from a Mercedes 300 S sedan , cutting 20 inches from center of the chassis , wellding the joints with gussets and plates . Front and rear axles , differential , spindles and running gear are stock Mercedes . The 1957 Corvette engine , a hopped-up 300- inch unit was build in and gives the speed to the carrier .
Production versions will be build on a full El Camino wheelbase ( approximately 120 inches) , with standard Chevy parts replacing the Mercedes sections . The reason for this is , that the carrier in that form will be able to be serviced and repaired at Chevy dealers across the country - providing they don’t faint from suprice first .
The price that time was $ 16.000,-
